Changing Cell Phone Service: Save $100s/year

Okay, so on our journey of mastering our personal finances and spending wisely, I’ve begun experimenting with changing cell phone service providers.

The usual caveat applies, this is an example of an option for readers, but just happens to perfectly fit our lifestyle, values, and budget. Your values and budget may vary.

We had a pair of (old) iPhones (we always stay a few models back, basically buying outright whatever the cheapest model at the time is. Of course, never phone payments!).

We had a Verizon family plan, two phones, unlimited calls/texts, and 2 Gigs of data (with rollover) per month. The cost was about $92/month.

Recently I’ve been investigating a new cell phone provider (GoogleFI – Join with this referral link and we both get $20 credit), because we needed new phones and because we really don’t use much mobile data (almost always have wi-fi, no social media, and download music and podcasts before long road trips).

We traded in our old iPhones, paying about $80 for each Moto G Power (after trade-in), and signed up for the $35/mo. family plan (total, including the two lines) with unlimited calls and texts and no mobile data (billed as used at $10/Gig/mo).

Two months in and we’re being billed about $35-$40/mo. We continue to use very little mobile data and are currently saving almost $60/mo! Annual savings: over $650!

We’ll keep our readers updated as the experiment continues!

Stay tuned!
